In the White Belt middle-weight category Ty Husbands, Graham Coles and Nick Hughes, were amongst the 24 competitiors battling it out for the honours.
Graham and Ty put in good performances and recorded wins in their first fights, but both were narrowly defeated in the second round. Nick Hughes recorded a points win in his first fight. In his next fight Nick was losing on points but choked his opponent into submission with only 10 seconds of the fight remaining. Another submission win placed Nick in the semi-final where despite trailing 8 - 3 on points, he submitted his opponent with an achilles lock in the final 3 seconds of the fight. The final was a very close affair with Nick losing on points after the fight had gone the distance.
Dean Bradbury and Merv Harries represented the Academy in the White Belt Heavy-weight category. Merv recorded three submission wins, including two triangles, en route to the final. On the other side of the draw Dean fought his way to the semi-final where he faced former Combat Academy fighter Sean # who now trains with one of our sister clubs, Gracie Barra Swansea. The pair were very evenly matched with Sean taking the win 3-2.
In the final Merv was forced to submit to a choke hold after Sean had controlled the fight.
In the White belt SS Heavy Chris Konieczny stormed his way to the final where he submitted his opponent with a key-lock to take the gold medal.
In the absolute Chris again recorded a number of submission wins before being forced to submit in the final and having to settle for the silver.
Emma Baker having taken a silver medal in the ECKA s/c karate nationals in Birmingham on Saturday, fought BJJ on the Sunday, Emma recorded her first win at blue belt against Pippa before losing to Christina McDonnagh of Gracie Barra Derby in the final, making her total for the weekend two silver medals a black eye from the saturday and some blood and snot on the sunday!
