The Combat Academy and Hereford Contact Karate Club hosted a Ju Jutsu Kumite and Submission Fighting Championships at the Richmond Club, Hereford.

The competition was run under the rules system of the National Ju Jutsu Kumite Council, with points being awarded for strikes, throw and takedowns, hold downs and for senior fighters submission techniques such as arm-locks and chokes.

In the boys under 35kg category Adam Tetley of the Welsh Falcons team defeated Ross Hutchinson and Olly Bohn of The Combat Academy to progress to the semi-final. Ross defeated club mate Olly to take the second semi-final slot. In the other pool of this category Combat Academy fighter Luciano Celozzi defeated three opponents to progress to the semi-final with Kristian Evans of Falcons filling the fourth semi-final position. In the semi-finals Ross defeated Luciano, and Kristian defeated Adam to progress to the final. In the final Ross scored with a variety of strikes and throws to record a 7 – 0 victory and take a hard earned Gold medal. In a closely contested fight for the Bronze medal Luciano defeated Adam 3 – 0.

In the boy’s heavyweight category club mates Daniel Hayes, Richard Baker and Barnaby Flynn fought in a round robin to decide the honours. Daniel is a Karate Black-Belt and only fought to give his lesser-experienced club mates some much needed competition experience. In order to avoid a whitewash Daniel was only allowed to score with throwing and ground-fighting techniques. Barnaby in only his second event put up a spirited performance losing 1 – 4 to Richard and 0 – 6 to Daniel. In the fight between Daniel and Richard the scores were level and with only a few seconds of the fight left Richard scored a single point to finish in first place.

In the senior under 80kg category Combat Academy fighters Danny McKwan, David McKwan and Lee Emmett faced Rob Lane of Falcons in a four way round robin. Rob and Lee recorded two wins apiece with Rob taking first place having scored more points in his fights. David McKwan put in a spirited performance in his first Ju Jutsu Kumite event to take the Bronze.

The Submission fighting event had two categories. Eight competitiors battled it out in the under 80kg category. Steve Cunningham of Range Fighting stormed his way to the Gold medal defeating Neil Preedy of The Combat Academy, and Paul Reed of Bristol Goshin Jitsu before defeating Falcons fighter Rob Lane in the final. Carl Edmunds of Falcons defeated Paul Reed in the fight for the Bronze medal.

In the open weight category Lee Whitehead of SSJ Milton Keynes showed some slick groundfighting skills to record wins over John Downes and Bram Roberts before defeating Chris Konieczny in the final. Dan Buckley defeated club mate Bram Roberts to take the Bronze medal.
