Hereford based judo player Stan Cantrill was amongst 500 competitors from 43 countries taking part in the 4th World Masterathlete Judo Championships held in Londonderry Northern Ireland.
Cantrill, a three time world silver medallist, was looking to improve his tally in the +50 years under 81 kg category. Cantrill stormed to the final defeating all of his opponents by the maximum possible 10 points (the equivalent of a knockout in boxing), including wins against opponents from Hungary, Germany and the United States of America.
In the final he faced a 5th Dan black belt, and quickly opened the scoring with a 5 point throw. Despite dominating much of the fight, Cantrill was thrown for 10 points with only 9 seconds of the fight remaining. And so it was to be a 4th hard earned World Masters silver medal.
Following a fortnight of rest, Cantrill will start preparing for the 2003 World Masters championships to be held in Tokyo Japan, where he is hoping to finally capture that elusive gold medal.
