Leigh Remedios Seminar
The Combat Academy held a seminar on Sunday March 16 with UFC veteran Leigh Remedios.
The first hour of the seminar was devoted to the junior members of the club, and Leigh worked with them showing how to adapt their usual Gi game to No Gi.
After a few takedowns the lesson progressed to the ground where Leigh covered the 100% sweep and passing the guard from the Combat Base position. After a recap of the lesson and a short Q&A session, Leigh posed for a few pictures with the juniors before ending the lesson.
The second part of the seminar was for seniors, and members of The Combat Academy were joined by Huw Griffiths and Darrell James from Falcons Martial Arts and six members from Tenbury MMA club.
Leigh started with a variety of No Gi takedowns and then moved onto the use of the butterfly guard in MMA, covering several sweeps in detail. From the bottom position of the closed guard, Leigh showed how to defend against punches, and turned defence into attack with three variations of a triangle set up. A number of guard passes were then covered before Leigh opened the seminar up to general questions, and identified solutions to various positional problems that were posed by the students. At the end of the Q&A session it was time for sparring and several students were delighted to have the opportunity to roll (and practice their tapping skills) with Leigh.
The seminar was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended, and Leigh's coaching style and attention to detail are first class.
Another great day for The Combat Academy and I'm sure we will be inviting Leigh back for another seminar very soon.
