Members of Hereford's Combat Academy travelled to Nantyglo Wales to compete in the Welsh Open grappling and submission fighting championships.

A junior national champion in Ju Jutsu Kumite, Olly Bohn was competing in his first ever grappling competition. Olly put in a tremendous performance defeating three opponents to take the Gold medal and championship title.

Another of the academies National Ju Jutsu champions, Becky Hayes was looking to add the Welsh grappling title to her already impressive fight CV. Becky defeated a Ju Jutsu black belt and two other opponents to take the second gold medal of the day for the Academy.

Sixteen year old Emma Baker competed in the womens under 56 kg category. In a very close fight Emma lost by a decision against Falcons Martial Arts fighter Teresa Duffey after the fight had gone the distance. In her next fight Emma defeated a Ju Jutsu black belt to secure a hard earned silver medal

Lee Emmett faced some tough opposition in the mens under 75kg category and managed to secure a hard earned bronze medal.

Ty Husbands is predominantly a Judo player who trains under World Masters Judo Champion Andy Morris at the St Martins Judo Club. Ty has also been training at the Combat Academy and was competing in his first submission fighting event. Ty adapted his Judo skills and recorded three excellent wins to take him to the final of the under 80kg category. In the final Ty was narrowly defeated after the fight had gone the distance and so had to settle for a very hard earned silver medal.

John Downes collected a bronze medal in the under 90kg category. Not content with the three fights he had in that category John then entered the open weight category. After an early win John’s next two opponents were from the strong Russian team that had entered the event, despite a valiant effort John lost both fights and so had to settle for another bronze medal.

Chris Konieczny makes a twice weekly, two hour round trip to train at The Combat Academy and this dedication certainly paid off as he stormed his way to the final of the under 105kg category submitting his opponents with a variety of strangles and arm-locks. In the final Chris was under pressure early in the fight as his tough opponent looked to finish the fight early. Chris weathered the storm and started to wear down his opponent, eventually forcing him to submit to a very painful arm-lock to take the third Gold medal of the day for the Academy.
