New Purple Belt
A huge congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Pat Baker on being awarded his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt by Braulio Estima at the Gracie Barra team seminar on Sunday 20th December 2009.
Pat has been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2002 and recently took the Gold medal and World title at the Master and Senior Championships held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

A Busy Weekend Ahead
All the best to the Combat Academy juniors who will be in action this weekend.
On Saturday 11 October Ryan Hill, Ross Cullum and Kai Davies will be competing in a no-gi grappling event hosted by UFC Veteran Leigh Remedios in Chippenham.
On Sunday 12 October Jodie Newell, Tyler Davies, Ben Oliver, Jade Lewis, Jack Greening, Lisa Jones and Sarah Jones will be competing in The National Ju Jutsu Kumite Council British Championships to be held in Worcester.

Grapple & Strike Fight Night 6
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighters Dean Bradbury and Chris Konieczny on an awesome performance at Grapple & Strike Fight Night 6, held on Saturday 26th September 2009 in Nantyglo Wales.
Making his semi-professional Level 2 MMA debut Dean Bradbury faced tough Iron Warriors fighter Luksaz Woloszyn over two four minute rounds. In the first round the fighters were fairly even with Woloszyn possibly edging the round. In round two Dean secured an early take down and established mount. Dean made several submission attempts and landed a steady stream of strikes to take the unanimous decision.
Making his professional rules Level 1 MMA debut, Chris Konieczny faced Martin Goodenough, who had traveled from Scotland for the fight. After an initial exchange of strikes Chris pulled off a massive takedown that shook the cage and had the crowd in its feet. With Chris on top in side-control, Goodenough had position for a guillotine but Chris remained calm working his head free and isolating an arm to secure a Kimura and get the submission at 1.34 of the first round.

AFL Cardiff Fight Night
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Chris Konieczny for an awesome performance at the AFL fight night held in Cardiff (4th July 2009). Despite gving away 20kg Chris dominated the fight with some impressive striking in the stand-up and a barrage of submission attempts on the ground. Chris was victorious at 1:30 into round two after forcing his tough opponent to submit to an arm-bar.

UK MMA League Finals
Dean Bradbury and Chris Konieczny competed in the finals of the UK MMA League (Sunday 24 May 2009). Dean lost by a decision in the semi-final to Michael McDermott who went on to win the event. McDermott has a W7 L0 D2 amateur record. Chris K was caught with an arm-bar in the final of the Heavyweight division, and had to settle for the runners-up spot. __________________________________________________________________________
Combat Sports Open Trials
Congratulations to Combat Academy fighter Dean Bradbury on a win, via a 'Deano Choke' and a draw in round 2 of the Combat Sports Open Trials.

Grapple & Strike: Fight Night 5
Despite giving away 13kg and about a foot in height, Combat Academy fighter Chris Konieczny put in a good performance in his semi-pro MMA fight v Andrew Cogzell from the Bristol Impact Gym. Chris looked to have won the first round despite getting rocked with a solid punch early in the fight, Chris took his opponent down several times and controlled the fight on the ground. In the second round Chris opened with a 'superman' punch that rocked his opponent, but was then caught with a guillotine choke and was forced to submit.

Inter Club Karate Competition
A huge well done to all that competed in the club competition on Sunday 19 April 2009, some very pleasing performances, especially from many who were taking part in their first event, and to those those that challenged themselves by stepping up in an additional division and fought more experienced team mates.

Grapple & Strike
Congratulations to The Combat Academy MMA team who took part in Round One of the Grapple & Strike League at Nantyglo Wales Sunday 15 March.
Jason Kemp, Neil Gardner and James Dickson were all making their Amateur MMA debut.
Jason Kemp defeated his first opponent with an arm-bar to secure a win. In his second fight he forced his opponent to submit to an RNC at 3:30 of round one.
Neil Gardner opened his first fight with some very effective striking before submitting his opponent with a guillotine choke 35 seconds into the fight. Guillotines were the order of the day for Neil as he submitted his second opponent using the same technique 58 seconds into the fight.
In his first fight James Dickson securred the take down, took his opponents back and started to work for the RNC. At 1:45 into the round James forced his opponent to tap to record his first win. James had a tough second fight and was caught with an arm-bar at 3:16.
Dean Bradbury has an amateur MMA record of - Won 4 Lost 2 Drawn 7 - having previously fought on Grapple and Strike, The Combat Sports Open Trials and the UKMMA League. Dean added another to the W column with an arm-bar submission at 1:18 of the first round. He then recorded draws for his next two fights.

Merthyr Mayhem MMA
Congratulations to Rob Howgate on his split decision win (amateur MMA) at the Merthyr Mayhem MMA event held on Saturday 7 March 2009. The win was even more impressive as Rob took the fight on two days notice.
Chris Konieczny was matched to fight semi-pro MMA on the same event but his opponent pulled out through injury two weeks ago. Chris accepted a submission grappling fight against a 136kg opponent on 3 hours notice. Chris lost to scissor choke in a fight where he gave away 40kg!

Braulio Amongst the Medals and the $$$$$
Congratulations to our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Chief instructor Braulio Estima on his victory in the BJJ Capital Challenge International held in Amman Jordan.
Braulio took Gold medals in the under 88kg and absolute categories and collected prize money in excess of $20,000 (USD).
